Der Grüne See liegt in der malerischen Region Tragöß-Sankt Katharein und ist ein Karstsee, der durch einen Bergsturz entstanden ist. In prähistorischer Zeit rutschte eine Bergmasse von der Meßnerin in Richtung Tragöß und bildete so den See. Das Wasser ist kalt, mit Temperaturen von 5 bis 6 °C, und der Wasserstand variiert stark je nach Jahreszeit.
