Introduced in 1973 and perhaps best known for its unusual three-abreast seating, the Bagheera was the product of co-operation between French aerospace company Matra and Chrysler-owned Simca. Of advanced design, the mid-engined Bagheera featured an all-independently-suspended spaceframe chassis, all-round disc brakes and attractive glassfibre.

Matra was a French defense contractor, and Simca was a French auto manufacturer (partly owned by Chrysler Europe) and when two companies love each other very much…well, you get the idea. The union of the two in 1969 produced a sports car that is…unique, to say the least.

In 1969, Matra was taken over by SIMCA, which in turn became fully Chrysler-owned one year later. Matra continued with their mission to produce an inexpensive, economical sports car, using off-the-shelf power units and running gear coupled with dramatic styling. In 1973, Matra introduced their newest concept, the M550—better known as the Bagheera and named. Matra Simca Bagheera S Coupè.

Matra produced some 47,802 Bagheeras at its factory in Romorantin-Lanthenay between 1973 and 1980, though during the final two years of production, the model carried the Talbot-Matra name after Peugeot purchased the entire Chrysler Europe division from the financially strapped American carmaker.

In June 1974, within eighteen months of its release, more than 10,000 Bagheeras had been sold. 1975 - "Bagheera" model was launched. This car got the larger 1,442 cc (88.0 cu in) engine from the Simca 1308 GT, as did the Courrèges the same year. With two two-barrel carburetors the engine produced 67.1 kW (90 hp).
